Gated communities are becoming increasingly popular and are available in the Charlotte Area with a varying degree of security from open gates to full guarded 24 hour security. Many communities are retrofitting their existing entries with automatic gate access systems. Unwanted traffic is greatly reduced or even eliminated. Charlotte ranked as the 23rd fastest-growing city in the United States.

New Orleans was was the fastest-growing city, with a population increase of 8.2 percent.

New York led the nation’s cities in numerical increase during the 12-month period, adding more than 53,000 residents.

GMAC will hire 'hundreds' in Charlotte

12:23 PM EDT on Friday, March 20, 2009

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Former bank employees could be among the first new hires as financial services company GMAC expands its Charlotte operations, according to people familiar with the Detroit-based lender.

“We’ll have some opportunity to employ some of the folks that have struggled in the recession,” said Charlotte city councilman John Lassiter, who was among the local officials who helped lobby for the GMAC expansion.

Lassiter, the chair of council’s economic development committee, said the bank holding company will be hiring “hundreds” of people ranging from executives to administrative assistants.

An official announcement on GMAC’s plans for Charlotte is expected Friday afternoon.

With a corporate office near Ballantyne and a Charlotte call center with about 200 employees, the company already has a presence in Mecklenburg county.

Launched 80 years ago as the lending arm of General Motors, GMAC won government approval in December to become a retail bank.

The company also obtained access to billions of dollars in federal bailout money, which can be loaned to customers.

Lassiter said the availability of unemployed bankers and access to reasonably priced office space makes Charlotte attractive to bank holding companies which are looking to grow their businesses.

“We’ve got other companies like Morgan Stanley and American Express who’ve created new entities that need a place to start their business and we think Charlotte is perfect,” he said.

The creation of hundreds of new jobs brings a glimmer of hope for Kim Nickens, a former closing coordinator for a title company.

Nickens, a 15-year veteran of financial services companies, said she was laid off in August and has been unsuccessful in her job search.

“It’s been very hard, and very frustrating,” she told NewsChannel 36 while attending a career seminar Thursday evening. “The competition is very high out there.”

High-paying jobs, similar to those anticipated from the GMAC expansion, are hard to find, Nickens said.

She said she welcomes any new banking jobs.

“Especially with Charlotte being the financial capital of the South, it’s going to be good.”
